Toyota Motor retained the title of the world's best-selling automaker for the seventh consecutive time, selling 5.39 million vehicles in the first six months of 2026. The Japanese manufacturer, whose sales fell by 2.8 percent compared to the same period last year, outpaced its closest rival Volkswagen, which sold 4.13 million vehicles.

Toyota Motor maintained its leadership in the global automotive market in the first half of 2026. The company held the title of the world's best-selling automaker for the seventh consecutive time, with 5.39 million vehicles sold in the January-June period.

SALES DECLINED BY 2.8 PERCENT

According to data released by Toyota Motor, the company's global vehicle sales fell by 2.8 percent compared to the same period in 2025, dropping to 5.39 million units.

Despite this, Toyota surpassed its closest rival Volkswagen AG, maintaining its global sales leadership.

INCREASE IN JAPAN, DECLINE OVERSEAS

The company's sales in Japan increased by 4.4 percent to 1.1 million units, while its overseas sales decreased by 4.5 percent, recording 4.3 million vehicles.

Toyota's sales in the U.S. increased by 0.9 percent compared to the same period last year, while they declined by 17.1 percent in China and 21.6 percent in the Middle East.

VOLKSWAGEN REMAINED IN SECOND PLACE

Toyota's closest rival Volkswagen AG's global vehicle sales in the January-June 2026 period decreased by 8.4 percent compared to the same period last year, totaling 4.13 million units.
