US President Donald Trump announced during a press conference that he will run for office again in the next presidential election. Trump, who said, "I have won three times, and now I will do it again," caused great surprise in the room with a hat reading "TRUMP 2028."
Trump spoke at the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, D.C.
"I INTEND TO RUN FOR A FOURTH TERM"
Trump, who rejoined the event today after it was first scheduled on April 25 and interrupted by a shooting, revisited the topic of a fourth presidential run at the end of his speech, which he previously called a joke. Trump stated, "I intend to run for the presidency a fourth time. I will take official steps. Actually, I think I've already done that; I've won three times, and now I'll do it again."
Opening with the words, "I am pleased to make an announcement to show how much I value the press and to save your ratings," Trump said that announcing his candidacy for president again would be "a kind of exclusive news" for the reporters in the room.
"WINNING WILL BE EASY"
In his speech, where he noted that running for president again and winning the race would be "easy" for him, Trump added, "I am very good at running this business."
HE PUT ON THE "TRUMP 2028" HAT
While announcing his re-election bid, the U.S. President took a red hat from his pocket—one he uses in his campaign—and put it on. The hat was seen to read "TRUMP 2028," and the room full of journalists fell silent for a moment in response to Trump's announcement.
HE HAD PREVIOUSLY MADE CONTRADICTORY STATEMENTS ABOUT THE CANDIDACY
In a statement on May 5, 2025, Trump had said he would hand over the presidency after eight years.
Earlier, on April 1, 2025, U.S. President Trump had said he would "very much like" to see former President Barack Obama as an opponent if a way were found to allow him to run for a third term.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states, "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice."
However, this rule could be changed with the support of two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, or two-thirds of state legislatures.
ARMED ATTACK AT THE PREVIOUS GALA DINNER
The dinner held on April 25 at the Washington Hilton abruptly ended when Secret Service agents evacuated Trump from the room after gunshots were heard near a security checkpoint.
Officials later arrested 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, who was allegedly planning to target several administration officials.
Allen is facing four federal charges, including attempting to assassinate the U.S. President.
