US President Donald Trump announced that a historic agreement has been reached on Hamas and other armed groups laying down their weapons in Gaza, thanking Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt for mediating the process. Meanwhile, Hamas stated that they will not lay down their weapons if Israel fails to fulfill its obligations under the agreement, while the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement announced that reports of an agreement being reached do not reflect the truth.
US President Donald Trump made a historic statement regarding the ongoing ceasefire process in Gaza. Trump announced that an agreement has been reached with the Gaza Peace Council and armed groups in Gaza, including Hamas, on the disarmament of these groups.
"HAMAS AND ALL OTHER ARMED GROUPS HAVE REACHED A HISTORIC AGREEMENT"
Describing the agreement as a major turning point on the path to lasting peace and security, Trump said, "This is a massive step on the road to lasting peace and security. This agreement is a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government that will work in close cooperation with the Peace Council to help the Palestinian people."
Trump noted that under the agreement, Gaza would be governed by a new Palestinian government, stating, "Gaza will finally be in the hands of a new Palestinian government that serves its people. I congratulate everyone on this tremendous development that everyone said could never be achieved."
"ISRAEL WILL WITHDRAW AS DISARMAMENT IS COMPLETED"
US President Trump also announced that as the disarmament process progresses, the Israeli army will withdraw from Gaza. Trump said, "As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for ensuring Gaza is safe for its residents and neighbors."
THANKED TÜRKİYE
In his statement, Trump also thanked the countries that played a role in the mediation process. The US President said, "We have made historic progress, and there is still much work to be done. I want to thank the mediators Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye for their important efforts, and especially my wonderful team, whose tireless work made this historic breakthrough possible."
HAMAS: WE WILL NOT TAKE STEPS IF ISRAEL DOES NOT FULFILL ITS COMMITMENTS
Following Trump's announcement, a striking assessment also came from Hamas.
Hamas negotiation team member Ghazi Hamad, in a statement to Qatar-based Al Jazeera television, said that if Israel does not fulfill its obligations under the agreement, Hamas will not take any steps regarding the draft on disarmament.
Stating that Hamas remains committed to its national goals of protecting the rights of the Palestinian people, Hamad said, "Unless the occupation forces (Israel) fully fulfill their commitments under the agreement, we will not take any step regarding the (disarmament of the) resistance's (Hamas) weapons."
Stating that the issue of weapons cannot be evaluated in isolation, Hamad said it is directly linked to fundamental topics such as Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the reconstruction of the region.
Emphasizing that Israel's full compliance with the agreement is a condition, Hamad reiterated that if Israel violates its obligations, Hamas will also not take any step.
Hamad also claimed that Israel committed approximately 3,500 violations during the first phase of the Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement, saying, "Israel is an aggressive state built on treachery and killing, which is why it did not comply with the agreement."
ISLAMIC JIHAD: THE NEWS IS NOT TRUE
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement also announced that the news regarding the agreement does not reflect the truth. In a written statement made by the Movement's Spokesperson, it was stated that the news about an agreement being reached between Palestinian groups and Israel is not accurate, saying, "The information announced in the media about an agreement being reached between the (Palestinian) groups and the enemy (Israel) is not true. We have reservations about it in its current form."
While Islamic Jihad announced that it has reservations about the agreement text as reflected to the public in its current form, it emphasized that news about the process should be handled with care.
